A woman has been hospitalized after, officials said, she leapt to safety from the fifth floor of a Pennsauken apartment complex during a fire that saw hundreds evacuated early Monday.
According to fire officials, the incident happened at about 2:16 a.m. on Monday morning when fire crews were dispatched to the Cooper River Plaza apartment complex along the 2400 block of McClellan Avenue in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
Prior to first responders’ arrival at the scene, officials said, a woman leapt from her apartment on the fifth floor of the structure in an effort to escape the flames.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, however, her condition was not immediately provided by officials.
On Monday morning, Chief Jonathan Hutton, of the Pennsauken Fire Department, told NBC10 that investigators believe the fire started in the injured woman’s apartment before spreading to impact at least 20 apartments in the building.
Officials said several hundred people were evacuated early Monday as fire tore through the building, and about 40 people have been displaced by the incident.
The fire was brought under control and residents were being let back into the building by about 6 a.m.
An investigation into what may have caused this fire is still ongoing.
